Miles River Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program

The Miles River Yacht Club's Junior Sailing Program offers beginner, intermediate and experiences sailing classes for kids from 6 to 17 years old. The program primarily uses Optimist dinghies but there is also a fleet of Club 420s, common in many high school and collegiate programs, for older students.

The MRYC Junior Sailing Program has taught sailing to kids for more than four decades and is a Certified Maryland State Camp, which means it meets the highest health, safety and staff qualifications.

The program includes multiple full-day sessions running from June through August. Students can enroll in multiple weeks.

The Club also hosts a Junior Regatta each summer and the program's racing team travels across the Bay area to compete.

Students not interested in racing can explore longer cruises, big boat sailing and instruction on navigation.

2024 Junior Sail Program

Last summer was a great success for our Junior Sail Camp. With 60 kids a week all summer long, we had lots of fun and made plenty of friends! We are planning for our 2024 summer sailing season right now with all the same classes. Registration opens on January 1st and is available at the link below.

Program Details

Here at the MRYC Junior Sail Program, we concentrate on the important parts of boating:

  • Being Safe
  • Learning to sail
  • Exploring racing
  • Enjoying teamwork
  • But most of all Having Fun!

For students ages 6 and 7 we offer a program called Sea Kids! It's a 1-week class to learn about being safe and having fun on the water.

For older students 8 to 17, we offer a progression of courses starting with learning to sail, moving through advanced sailing, and then into racing. For teen students, we offer classes in sailing as a team on larger 2-person boats. Most older students take two weeks of class or more to build on skills. Our basic boat is an Optimist, while the teamwork boats are Club 420s. We have lots of boats to rent if you don’t own one.

Is it all sailing?

Nope! We do a lot of sailing, but we also take breaks to play in the pool, have bailer battles, and sail to locations for picnics. All kinds of activities to have fun and stay cool.

Do I need to be a member?

Members of MRYC save a lot when registering, but classes are open to everyone. We have discounts for more than one student and for more than one week. Classes are Monday through Friday and are mostly 9 am to 4 pm. Older students may like to travel with the sailing team to regattas over the summer as well.
